About Delta 8 THC
Put simply, Delta 8 THC (commonly known as Delta 8) is an isomer of THC (A.K.A. Delta 9 THC), the psychoactive compound sourced from THC & Hemp. As isomers, Delta 8 and Delta 9 have the same chemical formula, but a difference in their chemical structures gives each product slightly different properties.
Because conventional drug tests do not differentiate between Delta 8 and Delta 9 THC, using Delta 8 products would cause you to fail a drug test, specifically if you are being tested for the presence of THC.
Although research on Delta 8 and how it affects you is ongoing, recent studies have suggested that Delta 8 can help with chronic pain due to its anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties. It’s important to keep in mind that Delta 8 affects everyone differently, and side effects vary amongst individuals.
In 2018, Hemp-based products that contain less than 0.3% Delta 9 THC on a dry weight basis were made legal on a federal level due to the 2018 Farm Bill, which clearly stated the difference between Hemp and Marijuana. Both plants are genetically similar, but they contain different concentrations of Delta 9 THC, which remains federally illegal. Because Delta 8 is Hemp-derived and synthesized from CBD, it is considered federally legal. In October of 2021, the Texas DSHS classified Delta 8 as a schedule 1 drug making it illegal in the state of Texas. However, a Travis County judge granted a temporary injunction and overturned the ruling, effectively making Delta 8 legal in Texas once again.
As of November 2021, Delta 8 is still legal in Texas.
Although Hemp derived Delta 8 is federally legal, some states have made it illegal, so it’s important to check the legal status of Delta 8 in your state before ordering any Delta 8 products.
Research into Delta 8 primarily focuses on the health risks and medicinal benefits; however, Delta 8 does have psychoactive properties. That being said, Delta 8 is known to be less potent than Delta 9. As mentioned before, everyone is different, and the effects of using Delta 8 varies between individuals.
The effects of using Delta 8 THC vary depending on the person and the dose taken. Consumers generally report a mild euphoric feeling when using Delta 8 in smaller doses, while larger doses work more like a sedative. Again, keep in mind that Delta 8 affects everyone differently, and certain side effects (whether desired or not) are never guaranteed.
Delta 8 is a naturally occurring compound found in cannabis plants. However, Delta 8 THC is found in such low concentrations in Hemp, that isolating the compound from the plant itself would take an amount of time and effort that ultimately is not worth the yield. Instead, most manufacturers synthesize Delta 8 from CBD in a laboratory.
Any THC & Hemp-derived product meant for human consumption, whether it’s coming from Hemp or Marijuana, is not considered safe for pets. Dogs and cats have cannabinoid receptors and can experience THC intoxication, though dogs have a larger amount of cannabinoid receptors in their brain, making them particularly sensitive to THC intoxication. THC intoxication is rarely fatal, but pet deaths resulting from ingesting THC in large concentrations have been reported. As a rule of thumb, it is never safe to give your pet any THC & Hemp products that are made for human consumption. Consult your veterinarian before allowing your pet to have any THC & Hemp derived product.
